Galvinized Steel: This is a decent beginner material, cheap and easily available
Aluminium: Really nice stuff, in large gauges can be used for shirts, but smaller stuff makes pretty decent jewelery.
Copper: Rather heavy stuff, not recomended for full shirts.
Stainless Steel: My personal favorite for maille in general, hard to weave and cut, but is generally easy to take care of.
